About
Peter Abery - Bortle One Astro Photography
I am an astrophotographer based out of Graman, near Inverell in NSW. I run astrophotography tuition from my studio in Graman, under dark Bortle One skies or can come to you on your rural property anywhere from the Hunter Valley north to the Queensland border.
I have completed a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging at Newcastle Arts School (TAFE) in 2021, and have achieved high results in such competitions as Capture the Cosmos, Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year, Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments.
I teach primarily nightscape astrophotography, however can also teach unguided telescope astrophotography. I can also come and take photos of your rural property either during the daytime or at night under the Milky Way and can take photos of you and your family under the Milky Way.

What to expect
During my tuition you can expect to learn how to use a tripod, theory, how to use apps to plan your Milky Way photos, practical shooting tuition and basic post-processing (using smart devices such as computers and smartphones).
I am a purist as to blending and composites and believe that merging two different exposures or views into one is more art than photography and as such you will not be learning blending or composite editing techniques from my tuition.
What you will be learning in your tuition with me is how to plan, shoot and edit such photos as:
Single shots
Stitched panoramas (the Milky Way arch)
Stacked single shots
Stacked panoramas
Star trails
I have various camera kits available for hire, ranging from entry-level APSC-C class DSLR and Mirrorless Canon and Pentax cameras to Full-Frame Professional DSLR Canon and Sony Cameras. All camera kits include a sturdy Manfrotto tripod with 3-way head, a backpack, spare batteries and a headlight with red light capabilities.
On the night of the class
The evening begins with theory in my studio in Graman, including ensuring we know how to use our cameras and tripods. Tea, coffee and light snacks are complimentary.
We then drive our own cars to the location where we will be taking photographs. The location will be provided once we are at the studio.
Our shooting location is a working private farm, so we may come across animals such as cattle or sheep, as well as native wildlife such as kangaroos. Due to potentially long grass, hazards can include wildlife and rusty metal amongst others.
